If you’re a smaller creator working toward YouTube monetization, the mountain just got taller.
YouTube’s monetization requirements are changing in 2027, making the climb toward full participation in the YouTube Partner Program significantly harder for new creators.
Beginning February 1, 2027, YouTube says creators applying for full ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing will need 1,000 subscribers and 8,000 qualified watch hours within 365 days — or 20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days.
That’s double the current watch-hour requirement.
And when I first heard the news?
I had a moment.
As someone building a YouTube channel while also managing a full-time career and business, I immediately started doing the math. More videos? More Shorts? More hours? More everything?
But after I got past my initial reaction, a much more interesting question occurred to me:
Why is YouTube making monetization harder now?
And could the explosion of AI-generated content have something to do with it?
AI Has Made Creating Content Easier Than Ever
Generative AI has completely changed the economics of content creation.
Today, creators can use AI to help research topics, write scripts, generate images, create video, edit footage, repurpose content and even create realistic digital versions of themselves.
Present company included.
If you’ve watched my recent videos, you’ve probably met AI Me aka “AIME” — my digital counterpart who helps me create content without requiring me to sit in front of a camera every single week.
But here’s the paradox.
AI may be making content creation easier while making attention harder to earn.
When almost anyone can produce more content faster, simply publishing isn’t enough.
That’s why I think these changes raise a much bigger question than how many watch hours we need to accumulate.
YouTube Is Also Drawing a Line Around Inauthentic Content
YouTube has been tightening its policies around repetitive and mass-produced content, including content that may be created at scale using AI.
But that doesn’t mean using AI automatically makes content low-quality … or inauthentic.
The distinction that matters to me is this:
AI can help create the content. It shouldn’t replace the person behind it.
My ideas, experiences, opinions, stories, strategy and yes, occasionally my slightly woo-woo perspective on life and business, are still mine.
AI simply gives me new ways to express them.
And I think that’s going to matter more as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common.
Your Personal Brand May Be More Important Than Ever
For years, creators and entrepreneurs have heard that they need to build a personal brand.
In the age of AI, I think that advice becomes even more important.
Because AI can imitate formats.
It can recreate styles.
It can help generate seemingly endless amounts of information.
But your lived experience, perspective, relationships, reputation and the way people feel when they encounter your work are much harder to replicate.
That’s the real opportunity.
Instead of asking:
How can I create more content?
Maybe the better question is:
How can I create something people recognize as mine?
That’s a question I’m asking myself, too.
So, Am I Giving Up on YouTube?
Nope.
Was I briefly tempted when I saw that monetization mountain get taller?
Absolutely! BUT I’m still climbing.
I’m going to continue experimenting, studying what resonates with my audience and using AI strategically to help me create without allowing technology to erase the humanity behind my brand.
Because monetization isn’t the only reason to build an audience.
A YouTube channel can introduce people to your ideas, establish your expertise, attract clients, create business opportunities and build a body of work that belongs to you.
Ad revenue is one potential income stream.
Your brand is the bigger asset.
And whether you’re already building yours or you’ve been standing at the bottom of the mountain wondering whether it’s too late to begin, I hope you’ll keep climbing too.
